Multiple panes of glass are used in insulated glass. A spacer separates the glass panes to create the separation. After that, an insulating gas or air is pumped in to fill the void left behind by the manufacturing process.

There are other names for insulated glass, including double-pane, double-glazing, and even triple-pane. These panes of glass are a “unit” because they are made up of several pieces, not just one.

It is not possible to replace or repair individual panes of glass in insulated glass units since the units are filled with gas and sealed.

Insulated Glass Types:
Two or more sheets of glass are sealed, separated, and filled with an insulator, making up the basic structure of any type of insulated glass.

What goes in between the glass panels is the distinction between the various varieties.

  • There is air in between the panes of air-filled glass, as the name suggests. Energy efficiency is improved by using air, but not as much as when using a gas. Longer-lasting seals are a plus compared to gas-filled models. Insulation that is packed with air is also the cheapest option.
  • Insulated glass filled with argon, a dense gas that provides the best possible window insulation. Argon-filled windows are more energy efficient than air-filled ones by roughly 10%. Low-E coatings are used on many argon-filled windows as an additional measure to reduce heat loss.
  • Krypton insulated glass is common in windows with narrow air gaps because krypton gas is denser than argon. Krypton is more expensive than other insulators because of its superior performance.
  • Glass insulated with the rare and expensive gas xenon. It is commonly seen in commercial buildings with expansive window walls. In homes, Xenon may not be cost-effective.

Are Low-E Glass Windows Insulated?


Insulating glass does not have a tiny covering like low-e glass. Low-e glass has a low emissivity, therefore it’s able to reflect warm air from within the house back out through the window. Solar-control low-E glass, a subset of Low-E glass, can similarly block the vast majority of solar heat from penetrating the windows.

Double or triple paned insulated windows with a Low-E coating are the most energy efficient option.

Do You Know How to Fix an IGU?


Insulated or thermal windows have the disadvantage that broken panes cannot be replaced. When a window’s seal fails or a pane of glass is broken, the entire window must be replaced. However, you can simply replace the broken sash rather than the entire window.

Cons:

  • Extremely challenging to fix; full sash replacement or insulated glass replacement is usually the only option.
    When the seal between the panes of a window is broken or worn out, condensation forms on the inside of the window.
    Compared to air-filled or single-pane windows, the cost of gas-filled insulated windows is higher.
